Excellent reading, but he’s not a detective! These stories are unusual for Agatha Christie in that they are well-thought-out and well-written. Much of her more popular stuff, particularly Poirot and Marple, was dashed off to keep things on the boil and many of them are, in my view, not worth reading. The Parker Pyne stories are different, but I will never understand why he is referred to as a detective. This gentleman is a former British Civil Servant who sets up an agency – an agency to help people with their problems – real or…

Pyne is not a detective Readers should be forewarned – Parker Pyne is not a detective – he is a retired clerk who advertises to make people happy. (Apparently reissued under the title Parker Pyne Investigates – several reviews there) Through deduction, sometimes worthy of Holmes, he figures out why a person is unhappy, and then provides scenarios to make them happy. This series of short stories starts with some straightforward examples, and ends with a couple murders, and kidnapping. Fun, light reading.

I love this book – and I love this book – and, when I placed it on my bookshelf, I realized I already owned a copy! These are great Agatha Christie stories – so different from her Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple series (which I also love to devour!). I have read the book numerous times over the years and plan on doing so again and again and again!
